IAB Field Events studies what happens when ordinary objects, modest coordination and unnecessary institutional oversight occupy the same afternoon. Select an event, inspect the approved equipment list, and maintain control of the field at all times.

Choose one discipline. Clear the area, use only approved equipment, and retrieve everything when the study concludes.

EVENT 01 / SOFT-LANDING BALLISTICSOPEN

PUT

Shot Put (Phone-Toss on Mattress)

Toss a phone onto a mattress. The safe, soft landing is part of the event.

Official brief

  1. Clear the mattress and the surrounding floor of people, pets and breakable objects.
  2. Stand beside the mattress and make one gentle underhand toss toward its centre.
  3. Confirm the phone landed safely, then leave it there while you do something offline.

Equipment ruling: no hard surfaces, long-distance throws, trick shots or damaged devices. A careful placement may substitute for a toss.

Discus (Skipping Stones)

Skip suitable stones where doing so is safe and permitted.

Official brief

  1. Use a permitted shoreline with clear water and no people, boats or wildlife in the throwing area.
  2. Select a loose, ordinary stone appropriate for skipping. Do not disturb protected areas or structures.
  3. Make up to five controlled attempts and record the finest skip count in your memory.

Venue ruling: if stone skipping is prohibited, unsuitable or unsafe, the event is closed. Admiring the water remains permitted.

Thumb Wrestling with Real Humans

Thumb wrestling performed in person with another human.

Official brief

  1. Invite a willing friend, family member or other known participant.
  2. Confirm both competitors are comfortable, clasp hands gently and begin.
  3. Attempt a light thumb pin. Stop immediately if either participant wishes to stop.

Sportsmanship ruling: one round is official. Best-of-47 negotiations are not recognized by the department.

  • Never throw toward people, animals, traffic, windows, fragile property or an unsuitable surface.
  • Use permitted public areas and respect posted rules, wildlife, shorelines and private property.
  • Participate only with willing people and stop immediately if anyone is uncomfortable.
  • Adapt or skip any event that does not suit your mobility, equipment or surroundings.
