Your Halloween side quest is waiting

Six small ways to make the night feel more mysterious—no elaborate setup required.

Halloween is excellent at atmosphere and occasionally terrible at giving you something to do between the big moments. These side quests are deliberately small: no shopping trip, special equipment, or elaborate setup. Start at home, take one outside, or hand a prompt to a friend and see what happens.

Choose one mission, set a timer if that helps, and stop when it is complete. A good Halloween plan leaves room for wandering.

01 / the promised fifteen minutes

Halloween scavenger hunt: six things hiding around you

Do this at home, around the neighbourhood, or at a Halloween gathering. Work solo or split into teams. No purchases, costumes, or prep—just use your eyes and stay somewhere safe and familiar.

Tap each find when spotted0 of 6 found
  1. Find something spooky. A shadow, decoration, old photo, creaky corner, or object that looks different in the dark.
  2. Find something orange. It can be tiny. Bonus points for the least Halloween-looking orange thing.
  3. Find a face. Spot a face in a pumpkin, window reflection, knot in wood, or anything else that was not designed to have one.
  4. Find a weird texture. Look for something bumpy, sticky, scratchy, or unexpectedly soft.
  5. Find a light that makes a shadow. Take a picture of the shadow if you can, but noticing it is enough.
  6. Find a tiny story. Choose one object and invent how it ended up there. Keep it under three sentences.

First person to complete all six wins bragging rights. If you are outside, stay on public paths, skip private property, and never approach a stranger’s home just to check a clue.

The hunt is complete. You found the strange hiding in plain sight.

02 / outside, not far

Make a ten-photo spooky walk

Walk one familiar block or route and give yourself one theme: crooked trees, porch lights, reflections, tiny pumpkins, or things that look haunted after sunset. Take ten photos, then choose the most atmospheric one. The rule is observation, not trespassing.

At home, do the same thing through windows or from the porch. The world gets surprisingly cinematic when you stop trying to photograph everything.

03 / set the mood

Build a haunted-house soundtrack

Make a playlist of seven songs: one genuinely eerie, one dramatic, one nostalgic, one that makes everyone laugh, and three nobody else in the room would have picked. Listen straight through while you decorate, cook, or walk.

Give the playlist an over-serious title. “Songs for the Hallway Light” is better than “Halloween Mix 2026.”

04 / kitchen alchemy

Invent one mystery snack

Choose three ingredients already in the kitchen and turn them into a snack or drink. One ingredient must be orange, brown, or purple. Taste safely, label anything with allergens, and accept that the first attempt may be the monster.

Make the judging part kind: best name, best colour, most surprising texture. You are creating a story, not auditioning for a cooking show.

05 / pass the prompt

A Halloween party side quest anyone can join

Put six prompts in a bowl and let people draw one whenever the room goes quiet: invent a fake urban legend about the house, find the best shadow, tell a true strange story, make a two-person monster sound, redesign a decoration using only words, or compliment someone’s costume detail.

Keep every prompt optional and short. The best party quest is one people can join without performing for the whole room.

06 / keep it going

Halloween weekend bucket list

Pick three: watch the sunset from a safe spot, visit a library or museum, make a tiny costume from clothes you already own, take a quiet neighbourhood walk, or leave an anonymous kind note. One outside, one cozy, one that makes another person’s day is a good balance.

For a ready-made seasonal board, try Fall Bingo. For a completely different prompt, spin the Quest Wheel and let chance choose.
