FAN MAKES CATCH OF A LIFETIME AT WORLD SERIES

Officials confirm object was vanilla ice cream.

Frank Delaney has spent thirty-seven years going to baseball games in the hope of catching a foul ball. He takes his glove every time.

During a World Series game, he finally got his chance.

A white object came sailing toward his section. Frank rose from his seat, reached over the row in front and made a clean one-handed catch.

The people around him cheered. Frank held his glove above his head.

Then he looked inside.

Vanilla ice cream.

A scoop had escaped from a cone two rows back, where a vendor was attempting to serve a customer while squeezing past several knees.

'I thought it was a baseball,' Frank said. 'It was round. It was white. I didn't have much time.'

The vendor offered him a replacement cone. Frank declined.

'I've waited thirty-seven years for this.'

Frank took the ice cream home in a paper cup and put it in his freezer.

He plans to leave it to his grandchildren.

ELEANOR BRIGGS JOINS BOOK CLUB, DISCOVERS NOBODY HAS READ THE BOOK

Eleven-year tradition of Thursday meetings remains unbroken.

Eleanor Briggs arrived at her first neighbourhood book club meeting on Thursday carrying a novel with several pages marked for discussion.

She was greeted warmly, offered a biscuit and asked whether she'd heard about Patricia's new kitchen.

After half an hour, Eleanor asked when they would begin discussing the book.

There was a short silence.

'Oh, we don't really do that anymore,' said club treasurer Ruth Bell.

The club began eleven years ago with six enthusiastic readers. They got through two novels before deciding that selecting the next book was taking up too much of the evening.

They now meet every Thursday without assigning any reading.

Eleanor, who had finished the book, was immediately nominated for president.

She has accepted, on the condition that nobody asks her to prepare minutes.

DIANE FOSTER GOES OUT FOR LIGHT BULB, RETURNS WITH WOODEN BIRD

Kitchen remains dark following unexpected hobby discovery.

Diane Foster went to the hardware store Saturday morning to buy a replacement light bulb.

Near the paint aisle she noticed a flyer for a beginner woodcarving class. The class started in twenty minutes, in a room at the back of the store.

'I thought I'd have a look,' Diane said.

Three hours later she came home carrying a small wooden bird, a packet of sandpaper and a registration form for next week's class.

Her husband asked whether she'd found the bulb.

'No. But look at this.'

The bird, which Diane believes is a robin, has been given a place on the mantelpiece.

The kitchen light is still out. Diane says she'll pick up a bulb tomorrow, unless the pottery class is running.
